The End, Part 4 – Jesus’ Second Coming, Aug. 23, 2020

Matthew 24:27-31 (NIV2011)
27 For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 28 Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather. 29 “Immediately after the distress of those days “ ‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’ 30 “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. 31 And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

3 Observations Regarding Jesus’ Return

Jesus will return immediately after the Tribulation
(Matt. 24:29-30)

Jesus will return publicly and visibly
(Matt. 24:27, Rev. 1:7)

Believers will return with Jesus
(Matt. 25:31, Zech. 14:5)

Matthew 24:21 (NIV2011)
…then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again.

Matthew 24:29-30 (NIV2011)
Immediately after the distress of those days ‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’ “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. Events Surrounding Jesus’ 2nd Coming

Jews in Jerusalem will flee “to the mountains” for 3½ years
(Matt. 24:15-16, Rev. 12:6)

The Antichrist’s allies assemble
(Rev. 16:12-16)

Armies attack Jerusalem, and it falls
(Zech. 14:2)

Zechariah 14:2 (NIV2011)
I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to fight against it; the city will be captured, the houses ransacked, and the women raped. Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people will not be taken from the city.

Events Comprising Jesus’ 2nd Coming

Jesus returns to the Mount of Olives to deliver Jerusalem
(Zech. 14:3-4, Acts 1:9-12)

Zechariah 14:3-4 (NIV2011)
Then the LORD will go out and fight against those nations, as he fights on a day of battle. On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south.

Events Comprising Jesus’ 2nd Coming

Jesus returns to the Mount of Olives to deliver Jerusalem
(Zech. 14:3-4, Acts 1:9-12)

Jesus saves those in Bozrah
(Isa. 34:1-7, 63:1-5, Joel 3:19)

Jesus defeats the Antichrist and his allies at Armageddon
(Rev. 16:16, 19:19-21)

Jesus binds Satan and reigns on earth for 1000 years
(Rev. 20:1-4)

Revelation 20:1-4 (NIV2011)
1 And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. 2 He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. 3 He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time. 4 I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony about Jesus and because of the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
